Mercedes Justine Keastner-Varnado, or Sasha Banks, is an African-American wrestler born on January 26, 1992. Due to her brother’s disability, Sasha’s family always moved until they settled in Massachusetts.
Banks’ wrestling training started in 2008 at the Chaotic Wrestling, Woburn. She trained for two years and made her debut when she team tagged with Nikki Roxx in an intergender match in 2010 under the ring name of Mercedes KV. However, they lost the game to Alexxis and Danny E.
Then, in January 2011, Banks had her first win when she and Roxx tagged-team against Alexxis’ team-up with Belmont. After the win, she had other losing matches but was able to win the Chaotic Wrestling Women’s Championship against Alexxis at the end of the year 2011.
Banks had a try-out camp in WWE in June of 2012, and she signed a contract with NXT, wherein she changed her stage name to Sasha Banks. However, she lost on her first debut match to Paige. Eventually, Sasha Banks went through a storyline wherein the end; she had to fight against Audrey Marie. However, she did not win over Marie.
On NXT’s August 14, 2014 episode, Banks and Bayley fight for NXT Women’s Championship; however, the former lost. Then, at the NXT TakeOver: Fatal 4-way, she attacked Bayley again until Banks and Charlotte got to be the last women standing. They fought in the NXT TakeOver: R Evolution and Banks lost to Charlotte.
On Banks’ last title match with Charlotte, she once again lost to the champion after Becky Lynch attacked Charlotte that led to Lynch’s disqualification. Then on the February 11, 2015, episode called NXT TakeOver: Rival, Banks finally won over Charlotte in a 4-way match with Lynch and Bayley. She retained her title in a rematch and again defended it against Alexa Bliss on March 25, 2015.
Throughout the years 2016 to 2019, Banks had a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs in the wrestling world. Until after Banks’ championship loss over Kay in the WrestleMania 35 on April 7, she was a no-show the next day at the morning show, Wendy. There were speculations that she wanted to quit the company due to her frustrations in her career with them. She had a four-month hiatus and showed up on the Raw’s April 12, 2019 episode. She then had several engagements with wrestling after her comeback.
