Born on January 19, 1946, Dolly Rebecca Parton was born to what was going to be a family of 12. Dolly Parton’s first memories composed of mountain folklore and songs sung by their mother. The large family moved to a farm near Locust Ridge, and Parton spent most of her childhood there.
Being in a “dirt poor” family inspired Dolly to be a songwriter. Most of her songs were from her life as a child, living in the mountains and a small one-bedroom cabin. She sang in church when she was six and had her first guitar at eight years old.
Dolly began singing on local radio and TV programs before she signed a contract with Goldband Records and recorded her first single, Puppy Love. Then, right after high school graduation, Dolly moved to Nashville and became a songwriter for Combine Publishing. She wrote several songs with her partner and uncle, Bill Owens. Some of their songs were Fuel to Fame sang by Skeeter Davis and Put It Off Until Tomorrow, sang by Bill Phillips.
Many of Parton’s written songs hit the charts until she got invited by Porter wagoner in 1967 to be a regular in his show The Porter Wagoner Show. She then started recording songs with RCA Victor. Her first single was Just Because I’m a Woman that got released in 1968. Although Parton and Wagoner made lots of effort to make the public love her songs, it was not a success.
It was her single entitled Joshua that made number one on the charts, and the rest of her songs followed the success. She then continued to be a success throughout her singing career and garnered numerous Hall of Fame awards, including the Grammy’s Hall of Fame for the song Jolene.
After her success in the music industry, Dolly Parton spent most of her earnings in business ventures and even bought the land in Locust Ridge. She founded and is the co-owner of Dollywood Company and also had philanthropic work. She founded the Dollywood Foundation, which focuses mainly on literacy.
Throughout Dolly’s life successes, her biggest fan is her husband of 54 years, Carl Thomas Dean. They have no children together.
