Actors Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern welcomed their baby, Laura Elizabeth Dern, on February 10, 1967. However, when Laura was two years old, her parents divorced, and she got raised by her mother. Also, during her childhood, Laura developed scoliosis.
Laura always had the blood of an actor in her. Aside from her parents, her grandmother was also an actress. So, her first movie appearance was an easy one. Laura became an extra on the film where her mother starred. Then, her official movie appearance was in the movie, Alice Didn’t Live Here Anymore in 1974. Laura was only nine years old during her debut in the film.
At only 16 years old, Laura got emancipation from her mother so that she could control her working hours as an adult while in movies. Then, in 1985, Laura started to work from one project to another. She appeared in Blue Velvet, where she received an exceptional positive criticism for her performance. Later, she received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the Academy’s along with her mother, who also received a nomination. The mother-daughter tandem got nominations for their performance on the movie, Rambling Rose.
Laura continued working on other movie projects from 1985 to 1993. She even did a daring role in the movie, Wild at Heart with Nicholas Cage. Dern revealed her boobs and ass in the film, making her more famous. She also starred in the box-office movie, Jurassic Park in 1993. Then, in 1996, Laura appeared in the comedy movie, Citizen Ruth. She played the lead character, Ruth Stoops.
In 1997, Dern appeared in a music video by the American Rock band, Widespread Panic. And along with her acting career, Dern was never idle with all her movie projects. In 1999, she portrayed the role, Miss Riley, in the biographical drama, October Sky. Then, Dern teamed up with Richard Gere in the movie, Dr. T & The Women, in 2000. But in the year 2001, she became too busy with all her five lined-up movie projects.
Within 2000, Dern appeared in Daddy and Them, reprised her role in Jurassic Park III, and starred in the movies, Focus, and I am Sam and Novocaine. Then, from 2002 to 2019, she appeared in more than 30 films. She even became Scarlet Johansson’s mother in the movie, Marriage Story, and earned an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
