need some advise

alright guys so here's my deal i have to pick a major this semester and i've been having some trouble with this. you see i don't know what to pick as i have several really big but hugely different interests. im going to list off my top choices and reasons for and against them. just some background info im a sophomore and i keep switching on what it is i want to do.

the first one that i want to do is biology. now i love animals and would love to go study them in the wild and really get into this. i find it fun to go do research on them but the problem is that there are very limited jobs in this field. the demands are extremely high and im afraid that i may not be able to do it. not only that but i don't know what kind of job opportunities there are and i would may need to stay in school much longer in order to get my degree.

the second one is history. but seeing as i don/t want to be a teacher i don't know what the hell i would do with this. like there are literally no jobs other than teaching for this. i would love to do archeology but getting into the programs takes years and is more than difficult. plus my school doesn't have the classes i would need

the third is computer graphics. the biggest problem i have with this is that it is a fairly low paying job (not that the other two will get me rich) and im not sure what kind of job opportunities there are. i don't want to get stuck in a job that will keep me inside all day either and as much as i like art there is not a very good chance that this could get me a decent paying job.

now i not asking you guys to decide for me but i would like some advise as this is a big decision and it would help me out a lot to hear what you guys think. im going to decide for myself anyways but it would be nice to hear your thoughts on the subject.
thanks everyone

You should go talk to the career counselor service at your school and see what kind of options are out there. I have a friend who majored in Biology and you can definitely get a job right out of school at places like the EPA and other not-for-profits (I live in DC) but she is now back at school going for her masters. At the end of the day, do what you like the most or what gives you the most satisfaction, but you should definitely take full advantage of the services your college offers...since they charge us out the ass these days!

I have similar issues picking my major, I also love doing computer graphics, I kinda just taught myself everything I know, but it's not easy finding a job doing that sort of thing.

I love history as well, but as you said, the only real job in the history field is to be a teacher.

Archaeology is pretty much as bad as being a history major, because there aren't any jobs available in that field.

It sounds as if you are more interested in the study of animals in the wild and their behaviors than the actual study of how their bodies work, and these jobs are also VERY limited.

Pretty much everything everyone ever told you about what you can do when you grow up is COMPLETE BULLSHIT.

"You can be whatever you want when you grow up!"
    "Just do what you love!"
------^^^ THIS IS NOT ECONOMICALLY VIABLE ^^^------

Not everybody can just do what they love to do and get paid for it, otherwise there would be a whole lot more artists and professional video game players in the world. Just because you love doing something, and you're really good at it, doesn't mean there will be a future in it.

"you mean I CAN'T be a penguin when I grow up??"

    "no. no you can not."

I'm still undecided as to what my major is, currently I'm doing some computer programming classes, and maybe next semester I'll study computer graphics and design.I have no confidence in finding a job that uses these skills, unless I become self-employed.

Sorry for not being helpful, but you and I are now entering the real world where nobody seems to give a damn about how well we know the mating habits of sharks, or when Magellan started exploring the world.

But here's a funny picture to take your mind of of things! --

I will be a fucking penguin and I will dance and you will love me. Deal with it.

I will love you, but I will refuse to acknowledge your existence to anybody.

I'm a major in Zoology I love animals and might go for a further degree later on in my career. I also plan to study abroad in Australia just cause. Don't worry about getting a job just focus on doing what you love everything will fall into place later on.

I would go with graphics and biology encompasses more than just animals it is cell structure and such, anyways you can always comeback to biology later.

graphic because the only jobs in the other jobs are teaching or you have to get a PHD

I would go with graphics it can be surprisingly well paying if you play your cards right.

    Heh. Graphics cards. Heh.

thank you I'm sorry iI was so blunt about it but we all literally just had an enormous argument about this and I just can't deal with having another like that right now. the site doesn't need that and it just upsets everyone. thank you for removing the post

I disagree with that, let's argue.
