We're a bit confused, but it seems like somebody in some way shape or form feels emotionally threatened by Sharenator.
That's a cropped screenshot of what we've been seeing every time we try to go on the Sharenator.com home page. Despite that, we were even able to make this post. So if it's a hacker, they suck pretty badly at it...
...Anyone else encountering this silly message?
Yesterday, an anonymous member took down about 10% of the internet by taking down GoDaddy's DNS servers. A DNS server is like an info desk for your computer. Your computer asks where "sharenator.com" is and the DNS server tells your computer "It's at 108.60.201.194".
Basically, by taking down the DNS server, your computer can't find where the server is unless it already knew that number.
Also, the hacker not only managed to take down these DNS servers, but also hijack them to redirect to another site. Basically, it redirected some traffic to a site that just says "fuck off you bastard".
Paul has sorted this by changing the nameservers for Sharenator. However, because of the spaghetti tangle of DNS servers worldwide (your router, ISP, their ISP and the "main 7" all are DNS servers) and how some of these "cache" lookups so they reduce server load, this update doesn't take effect for everyone. This means that even though there are new nameservers, you still are not finding the correct address because your DNS hasn't reloaded this new information and is still pointing you to the old one.
To give an idea about how many DNS and Nameserver's you go through, this is a "traceroute" - a list of all the "stops" you go from your computer to that website's server. This includes all the nameservers: http://pastebin.com/7UBn3VHb
/>
look at that, 20 stops between my computer and sharenator! If any one of those stops still had the old DNS entry cached, I would end up seeing "fuck off you bastard".
And clear yours :)
Yesterday I had problems to get on sharenator it just didnt work and now it says fuck off you bastard.
