I hate the prequel trilogy. (Can I assume you're talking about Star Wars? If so, let the fanboy debate of the century commence. Otherwise, please disregard.)
    - CrazyJay April 12, 2011, 3:23 pm
Yes, I am. First, I'd like to give you the opportunity to defend your position of hating it. I will then provide my rebuttal.
    - Ertrov April 12, 2011, 4:07 pm
    Well, there's a few reasons:

    1. Plot inconsistencies. There are quite a few examples of this. Remember in Jedi, when Luke asks Leia if she remembers her real mother? Leia says she does, yet in Revenge of the sith, Padme dies right after Luke and Leia come out of her!

Then there's the force. The way Yoda and Obi-wan talk about it, they describe it with reverence, as though it's this glorious, supernatural energy field that binds all life together...in Phantom menace, we find out that the force is just a bunch of bacteria living in your cells (Mediclorians).

    2. The Jedi. They do a lot of things that bother me in the prequels. For example, remember how reluctant they were to train Anakin? This is the Jedi with the highest *cringes* ...mediclorian count of all, yet they seem annoyed that Qui-Gon even brought him to their attention. Not only that, but in Attack of the clones, the idiot Jedi don't realize that the clone army was clearly created in anticipation of the war. Nor do they realize there's a powerful Sith Master in their presence (Palpatine of course) until it's far too late. They seem no where near as wise or intelligent as Yoda and Obi-wan in the original movies

    3. Lightsaber battles. It seems like in the new movies, the lightsaber battles reek of choreography. The battles feel more like music videos than fights to the death. Seriously, watch the darth maul fight next to the duel between Luke and Vader in Jedi and you'll see what I mean.

    4. Padme + Anakin. Natalie Portman and Hayden Christianson are chemically dead on screen. If we didn't know these two were supposed to end up together, it would have seemed disturbing. Maybe this is nit picking, but think of how important this romance is: This is Luke and Leia's parents! Not to mention the on screen chemistry between Han and Leia is much better (Wheras you can detect attraction behind their bickering, dialogue from Padme to Anakin comes of as legitimate rejection. Example: When Ani's asked his opinion and called master jedi in Clones, Padme just says, "Oh, Anakin's not a Jedi, he's still a Padawan Learner. Rejection if I ever saw one.)

    4. Effects over Story. I'm sure you've heard this one before. I'm not crazy about CGI acid trips, I preferred the organic effects from the first movies. Since this is purely opinion I won't elaborate.

    5. Anakin Skywalker. In Phantom menace, he's played by the insufferable Jake Lloyd. Enough said. Christianson's performance is less annoying, but we see a huge change in Anakin (he's gone from an altruistic young lad to an emotional whiny young lad, stuck in the body of a 20 something year old) He does stupid shit for weak motivation. For example, in Clones, when he's supposed to be protecting Padme on Naboo, he ignores council orders to go to tattoine because of a few nightmares about his mom. Then he disobeys his orders again to find obi-wan and he, padme and Obi-wan all get captured by count Dooku and the separatists. Then, *groans* in sith, he betrays the council, allies himself with a sith lord, slaughters children, ends democracy, all because of a few nightmares about Padme (did it occur to Anakin that killing kids might not be a turn on for her?) Then the idiot tries to kill her...guess we gotta chock it up to "Dark side made him do it". He's so easily manipulated by Palpatine, but since he'd already murdered all the the men, women and children in the sand people's camp, I suppose genocidal rage shouldn't surprise us with Anakin, in which case, there was no fall at all, rather he was always an evil prick, all Palpatine did was soften him up to the idea of being a Sith, by making vague promises and being so creepy that Ani should have had the sense to tell the council long before he actually did. Nothing about his fall feels that tragic, just idiotic. Not to mention it just makes Him turning good back in Jedi feel weird, since he was never good to begin with.

I have other complaints, but I wasn't up for writing a novel. I'll leave it at that for now. Also notice how I didn't mention Jar-Jar.
    - CrazyJay April 12, 2011, 4:47 pm
    haha! win!
    - mariofox03 April 12, 2011, 5:07 pm
    1. If you read novels in the expanded universe, it is shown that some Force-sensitive infants keep memories from very early on through the Force. Since Anakin was conceived from the Force, it's no surprise Leia has this ability.

Ah, the Midichlorian issue. In "Path of the Jedi", it's revealed that although midichlorians provide the biological connection to the Force, and give the Jedi a way to estimate one's ability to use the Force, they are NOT the Force itself. It is much more spiritual.

    2. Yes, that was the point. The Jedi had become comfortable and self-righteous. Only a few were really still wise. And look which ones survived the purge.

    3. I'd say that the battles looking choreographed shows how precise the Jedi and Sith have mastered combat. They make no mistakes, and the battle seems to flow as it goes on. But that one could be seen either way, so I'll give you that.

    4. Although I agree with you to a point here, it was bound to happen. The fact that GL found unknown (except kind of Harrison. He was known but not that famous) actors that worked so well together was a lot of luck. He tried it again and it didn't work as well. They still have their moments though.

    4. (you put 4 twice so this is the second one) I also prefer the original effects in most cases. However, it would have been impossible to make the droid army without CGI. Also, I didn't think the CGI took away from the story. Please elaborate on that.

    5. Anakin is supposed to be a douche. He is only trained and then spoiled by the Jedi because of his power and the Chosen One prophecy. Also, Vader was never that bright in the Original Trilogy. He blindly served the Emperor until the end of RotJ.
    - Ertrov April 12, 2011, 5:49 pm
    1. I'll take it, but I can't help but feel that it's a cop out, particularly since this isn't made clear in the movies. I haven't read the novels, a lot of star wars fans haven't. With something as important to the series as the force, they'd clarify this. Even if Leia some how remembers, that's less than 1 minute of of life before padme dies. No matter how force sensitive Leia is, she wouldn't remember, particularly if Luke couldn't (He was born first, and states in Jedi that he "has no memory of his mother."

    2. But you would still think the Jedi would be able to use the force. If they can sense a disturbance in the force, you'd think finding Palpatine would have been no issue. This isn't simple ignorance, a lot of it is pure stupidity. (Again, keeping the clones. Disaster waiting to happen)

    3. Ultimately, they just didn't feel realistic to me. If you like watching the techniques I guess there's enjoyment to be found. This is why the final duel in episode 3 bores me. Must again reference the final fight between Luke and Vader. It wasn't just pure fighting, the battle was punctuated with dialogue, and as a film scene it worked much better because the violence felt like more of a means than an end rather than just the whole point of the scene. Obi-wan vs Anakin just drags on, epic to an extent, but it's a tad grueling.

    4. That might be why the chemistry worked better, These 3 pretty much made their careers together.

    4. (I'm sorry, it's kind of late. Why stop now though?) Well, some of the scenes feel like they've been shoved in for the sake of being eye candy. You mentioned the droid army and that's a perfect example. That scene where they're about to fight the Gungans just looks like a video game cutscene. Then there's the pod race. Too long and we all knew Anakin was going to win, why drag it out? Sometimes it's impressive, but it doesn't add anything. (Don't get me started on the added scenes to the original films.)

    5. This just takes even more away from the jedi's credibility. Particularly since his training should have had the opposite effect on him. I don't think Vader serving the emperor was a matter of intelligence, he was just evil the whole time, as we've established. Hence there's zero redemption at the end of Jedi, which defeats the whole point to him turning good again in the first place.
    - CrazyJay April 12, 2011, 6:16 pm
heres my opinion short and sweet. The trilogy definitely beats the prequels, thats a given. The prequels seemed a lot more like a soap opera than epic movies to me. the only one i liked out of the 3 was the revenge of the sith, I liked the transition that showed you why theyre were barely any jedi left and how things got to where they were. Personally i think the prequels were aweful, but they did offer a bit of a nice backstory. they should have had 1 prequel, that woulda been enough to get the job done
    - bufus101 April 13, 2011, 5:43 am
You know what would have made the prequels interesting? If Palpatine was the protagonist. Think about it: He has to organize elaborate plans to take over the galaxy, while keeping the Jedi off his back. He has to find new apprentices (From Maul, to Dooku, to finally Anakin.) He has an army created to destroy the Jedi, not to mention nobody figures out how much he's accomplished until it's too late, and he's already emperor.
    - CrazyJay April 13, 2011, 5:49 am
thats true. He is a boss in those movies. He truly is the best jedi out of all of them. He even beat yoda in revenge of the sith. that takes skill. that would have been a cool prequel, plus you would have still gotten all the necessary plot line across. George Lucas probably thought though that all 6 movies should be viewed from the jedi's standpoint, which is understandable
    - bufus101 April 13, 2011, 6:55 am
    1. Although I agree that they should have clarified this in the films somehow, it is completely possible. Jedi don't see the Force with their eyes, so really Leia had 9 months with Padme to remember her presence by. Including her appearance. Also, it isn't guaranteed that Force sensetives, even twins will both have this power. Leia just happened to, just as Luke has powers that she doesn't.

    2. They couldn't sense it because Palpatine was shrouding himself using the Dark Side. He only relied partly on the Jedis' arrogance. He mainly succeeded using his own power.

    3. Don't get me wrong, the original movies are way better and this includes the duels. But that doesn't mean the new duels aren't good. Instead of comparing the battles to the ones in the Original Trilogy, compare them momentarily to other scifi movie battles. Nothing comes close.

    4. Agreed.

    4. (part 2 lol) That is a good point, but I honestly don't see a problem with the droid/gungan battle. It got right to the point, the droids deployed, attacked, and quickly subdued the gungans. The podrace was mainly to show off CGI, but I thought it was well done, and quite impressive. We all know that Spider-man will beat the villain at the end of each of those movies, yet they show the whole battle. Same thing here. We know who will win, so it's about enjoying the moment rather than being in suspense. Also, what's wrong with added scenes to the original films? The original Max Rebo Band song was TERRIBLE.

    5. I'd say he was more selfish than evil to start with, which led him to do things which calloused him and made him more evil. But obviously there was still good in him. It was a matter of stupidity though. The only reason he joined the Dark Side was because Palpatine deceived him into thinking it could save Padme. Maybe gullible is a better term for than stupid. And yes, it drags down the image of Jedi training, but that is again, intentional. The Jedi order was very flawed at that time. Luke's Jedi Order was much more successful.
    - Ertrov April 13, 2011, 2:32 pm
    1. You're more familiar with the extended universe than I am, so I'll have to take your word for it. However, you have to admit this is mostly speculation.

    2. I'll take it. It's sensible to assume the Emperor is this powerful. After all, he proves more than a match for Yoda, who's to say he can't shroud himself with the Dark side? Then again, Samuel L. Jackson was about to lay his vengeance upon him (Had to chuck in a Pulp Fiction joke and yes I know his name is Mace Windu) until Anakin shows up.

    3. That's fair. I have a tendency to compare these two trilogies and will admit that as far as movie battles go these days, they're impressive for sure. As movies, the prequels aren't bad. As STAR WARS movies, I think they're disappointing.

    4. My issue with the added scenes is that they stick out way too much. (All of the added mos Eisly scenes for example.) CGI in a film next to all of the organic effects is distracting, and unecessary. Part of what makes these movies so cool that every effect was a physical object, be it models, puppets, etc. Screw the Max Rebo song, I was thinking more about Greedo shooting first (HAN. FUCKING. SHOT. FIRST. Why did Lucas feel like he had to change this? It doesn't make Han look like a cruel Character, it's about being smart since Greedo was ready to shoot him. Plus his head digitally moving looks ridiculous.)

Then there was replacing Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christiansan (Taking an actor out of the movie seems pretty low to me.) It feels to me like these changes are make just to show off the tech. Other than the seen with Han and Jabba in a New Hope, they don't add to the story, so why bother? I'd like to see the original, unaltered trilogy released on Blu-ray someday, but I'm not getting my hopes up. I also know that George Lucas once said "Films are never finished, only abandoned." But how many changes could you possibly want to make? We love these movies for a reason, and it's not CGI.

    5. The thing is, if there was any real good in Anakin, he wouldn't have shown up stopped Windu from killing Palpatine. That should have been his realization that "Oh shit, our Leader is an Evil Sith lord, and has emergency powers. He's in it for the power, he doesn't give two fucks about me or Padme." I wish Lucas had given him a stronger motivation to join the emperor and destroy the Jedi.
    - CrazyJay April 13, 2011, 3:28 pm
Just a few things I'd like to touch on from that, although I agree with most of it.
    1. Although it does sound like speculation, it is stated clearly in the EU that Leia does have that ability and that it's how she remembers Padme.
    4. Yes, Han definitely shot first. And although canonically it kind of makes sense to change Annie's ghost, you're right, it's pretty low professionally to Mr. Shaw.
    5. Again, he was very very gullible lol. He completely convinced himself (with Palpatine's help of course) that the Jedi had betrayed the Republic.
    - Ertrov April 13, 2011, 5:17 pm
    1. In all honesty, that just sounds like something made up (Canon in the Star Wars universe) just to fix the problem I already addressed. But hey, what's canon is canon I suppose.

    5. I'm finding it hard to suspend my disbelief still. No one could be that gullible. I think the best explanation I can really think of is "Dark side made him do it." Palpatine is using the force here. (This is how I justify the Romance between Ani and Padme. To steal a quote from an online reviewer I enjoy, "He just whips out his cock, waves his hand and says: This IS the droid you're looking for!"

This has been fun, by the way.
    - CrazyJay April 13, 2011, 5:30 pm
    Indeed it has :)
    - Ertrov April 14, 2011, 1:06 pm
That would have been more interesting then anikan.
I hated the newer movies because it focused to much on romance... this is star wars bitch! i didnt go to the theaters to see a romance film. Worst movie was episode 2.. the one battle between the clones and droids/Genotians was cool, but that was the only good part for me.
