UK National Service Bill 2013-14

UK National Service Bill 2013-14

Currently there is a Private members Bill passing to its second reading in the house of commons that asks,
the government to pass a law to provide a system of national service for anyone aged 18+

What the Bill contains

1- Every individual who has attained the age of 18 years, and who has not
attained the age of 26 years, shall be liable to serve one year of national service
at some point between these years unless exempt.

2- Exempt individuals are those with severe mental or physical disability.

3- National service shall be defined as participation in a full time scheme
accredited by HM Government as meeting the requirements of national service
and set out in regulations by the Secretary of State.

4- Non-exempt individuals who do not serve one year of national service before
the age of 26 years shall be guilty of an offence.

Thoughts & Opinions:

Personally, I strongly disagree with the 'National Service' system.
Being of an age that would be made to do so is a scary thought,
There hasn't been a lot of media coverage on this matter to my knowledge, which is odd.
As i am writing this post there has already been one meeting '1st reading: House of Commons 24 June, 2013 | 24.06.2013'
And there is another one today: '2nd reading: House of Commons | 06.09.2013'

honestly... i'd prefer this to be in the US instead of the UK and military service, not general.
to my knowledge you guys dont have anywhere near as many issues as we do as far as weapons and stuff. but i know that if more people in the US learned at least some sort of gun safety and respect for others we wouldn't have near as many problems as we do now.

    sorry, ranting.

This sounds like it might be kin to that of the United States' Selective Service System(SSS). After we reach the age of 18, we must register with the SSS so that if there is a situation where they would need to reinstate a military draft they could draw from those registered in order to get the bodies needed to fill the uniforms. While there is no threat of a draft coming about in the near, nor shall there be in the distant, future we still must be registered before we turn 19. If not, we can be imprisoned for treason.

I wish our SSS was like your Nat'l Svc Bill, but that's mostly because I was denied the ability to join the service due to asthma.

In the US we have selective service, I won't go into it because it's been covered pretty well already. And like mikytey I really wish this would be implemented in the US as it would strengthen the second amendment of our constitution by training the unorganized militia with regular infantry or organized militia at the very least. Though I don't think this is a good fit for the UK where as a selective service system might be more fitting (an "if we need you we'll let you know" sort of thing). just my opinion in the matter though.
