Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA).

I don't think anyone's made a post on this matter yet, I don't know if it's because people are unaware or just do not care. But I'm posting this anyway to try and raise awareness, because from comments I've seen it isn't being covered by the media so people are unawares as to what is happening.

Basically, SOPA proposes new laws (in America) which are supposed to help stop internet piracy (as the name suggests), but a lot of internet "giants" (such as google, Facebook, Twitter etc.) and other people oppose it as it could lead towards internet censorship.
If the bill passes (I don't think it has as of yet) then it will mainly affect Americans, but it may lead to other countries following suit.

Personally I'm against it as it not only could lead to internet censorship, but would punish innocent sites unless they strictly police their users.

It's probably best for you to look it up yourself (if you already haven't), as my explanation was very brief (and probably biased), before you make a decision of your opinion on the matter.

(Also, I know there was an official day to raise awareness/prevent this on the 16th, but now is the soonest I've been able to make a post about the issue.)

Piracy gave me 2tb in movies and tv shows, along with many programs i use in college that allow me to do school work on my computer instead of having to go to the computer labs. this act can go to hell

Damn it, man, you're the reason the rest of us us suffer. I have fury.
    - Ertrov November 19, 2011, 12:19 pm
    suffer how? lol
    - bufus101 November 19, 2011, 12:54 pm
Hate to have to link Wikipedia, but it's the best (relatively) in depth summary stating the concerns over SOPA and why people may suffer.

If it weren't for pirates, this act wouldn't happen.
    - Ertrov November 19, 2011, 10:44 pm
im just saying im not going to buy a 200 dollar ipod to spend 2000 dollars on songs...
    - bufus101 November 19, 2011, 11:33 pm
and the only people suffering are who? the only thing i pirate is music and movies. most rich people in the country are acters, and i think the world can survive with a few less musicians. not trying to say piracy is a good thing but i dont believe ive done much wrong doings to the economy
    - bufus101 November 19, 2011, 11:34 pm
    read above comment
    - bufus101 November 19, 2011, 11:35 pm
Not those people, I meant the millions of internet users who might have their freedoms restricted by this bill.
    - Ertrov November 20, 2011, 12:20 am
That's like saying it's ok to steal gas because you spent a lot on the car already. If you don't want to pay for something, you don't have the right to own it.
    - Ertrov November 20, 2011, 12:20 am
well sir you make a good analogy and point. i honestly dont think i can win this argument because piracy is technically wrong. I guess im just trying to say that i dont see pirating songs as too big of a deal, since most of them are on youtube anyways. stealing gas though would be an entirely different story
    - bufus101 November 20, 2011, 12:26 am
what freedoms would be restricted? not saying i disagree with you im actually just curious
    - bufus101 November 20, 2011, 12:27 am
I really recommend against it, man. People have been fined in the millions by the government for pirating songs. Not worth the risk, no matter your own opinion.
    - Ertrov November 20, 2011, 12:30 am
The government would have the ability to block what websites people can visit. It's similar to China's internet censorship, though not as extreme.
    - Ertrov November 20, 2011, 12:31 am
yeah china's censorship is nuts. but idk i dont think that would fly for too too long because even the government is making plans a very lot of people are refuting it. like, a very lot of people
    - bufus101 November 20, 2011, 12:32 am
well thats because people are for lack of a better word retarded. plus im not stupid about it. i use dc++ at my school which is a closed network inside the colleges internet. its like a large home sharing network across my college. i dont actually torrent stuff off the internet except my school programs that i need for class. but shit if the school wont give me a student edition ill get it myself
    - bufus101 November 20, 2011, 12:34 am
Valid point. you win a pirate song.
    - Ertrov November 20, 2011, 12:40 am
i can support your point on online piracy, but really, nobody should own the rights to fuel. Nobody really creates it, they just extract and exploit it for profit. That's like saying it's wrong to steal water. Commodities such as fuel or water that we damn well need are fine to 'steal' in my eyes because quite frankly, nobody owns it or should stop you having it. Better analogy next time.
    - Bekenel December 23, 2011, 6:54 am
By that logic, nobody should own anything that comes from nature, which is pretty much everything. We aren't paying oil companies to create oil, we're paying them to extract it. It's all labor cost, just like farming.
    - Ertrov December 23, 2011, 7:07 am
so what is money? what does it mean? why should anybody own anything.
You missed the point, i never said everything that comes from nature, i said what we need. But of course such commodities must be privatised and commercialised rather than being put under public office. Corporations and profits are so important that it is impossible to even think of reducing prices on such essentials. If you see what i mean, i'm saying people care more about money and less about what is actually needed.
    - Bekenel December 23, 2011, 8:29 am
Without money, those corporations can't afford to pay workers to get the oil out of the ground, and then we don't have oil. If you let the government do it, it still costs money. And you know who pays for it then? Us, through taxes. Either way, there's no free lunch. The difference is that companies will compete, which drives the price down. The government would have a monopoly.
    - Ertrov December 23, 2011, 8:33 am
And what's the matter with paying more taxes? I'm not saying people who can afford it less should pay more in tax, big businesses , corporations and the rich should pay more. But nooo, money is far too important to everyone to let the government actually do something worthwhile with it, rather than allowing it to lie unused in a private bank account. And in the hands of corporations, of course these commodities won't be subsidised. Governments having a monopoly on it should realise that if public funds are going to these things, getting anything back from it should cost less. But no, people should obviously just keep their money to themselves and not let government do anything with it. At the end of the day, it is still just money would far rather give it in tax to government that will be able to do far more good with it and keep it regulated, than to some free-market corporation that can do exactly the hell they want with it without having to be responsible to anyone.

an act like this failed before. It is bound to fail again

saw this while trying to download windows 7 off the internetz:

"In response to a complaint we received under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act, we have removed 1 result(s) from this page. If you wish, you may read the DMCA complaint that caused the removal(s) at ChillingEffects.org."
    - bufus101 November 18, 2011, 10:43 pm
thats different though a company can force a website to remove its prodcut if they are breaking there terms of agreeement. If it is hosting the thing itself it can get in trouble thats why videos get taken off of youtube also
    - buddyfoeva November 19, 2011, 7:25 pm
thats true. just wanted to add some input showing people are doing something to stop piracy

I actually signed a petition agaisnt this, and saw some quotes from congress regarding it. According To Nancy Pelosci, this Bill is going to be dead on arrival and even Darrel Issa (the republican rep from California) is against it. It's not needed anyways, because big companies can already file copyright claims to protect their stuff. In order to really stop all piracy, you'd have to download the contents of every hard drive ever used, which is ridiculously unethical. This bill is just more invasive crap that we don't need.

Not that I'm for piracy or anything - but these laws are not needed. Websites already deal with this kind of content themselves - YouTube constantly trawl videos for copyrighted content and remove it.

The US Government should not be able to censor websites at all - they should be allowed to seize websites within their own country (like they already do) if they break the law, but not censor those that they can't seize.

This can do only more harm then good. Plus I torrent a lot so its kind of annoying that it would be gone, but there will be ways to get around it so meh.

    Downrated, Thanks.
