Sharenator Newbie Guide!

Hi there new person!

Welcome to Sharenator.com!
sharenator - sharenator newbie guide!

Remade Logo :P

Here is a short guide to get you started:
It seems like a lot, but just skim it before doing anything else :-)

First things first...

Make an Account
If you haven't yet made an account, make one! Once you make one you will be able to:
-Create posts and share anything!*
-Comment on other posts!
-Favourite posts for future viewing
-Rate other posts
-See less adverts!

And the minor benifits:
-Have an Avatar
-Be part of an Active Community
-Share the Best of the Best of the Internet*

Don't worry about your email address. It's just for reference, if the admins would like to say something personal. You don't have a silly newsletter that spams your inbox.

*All posts must follow Sharenator's Terms of Service, which means that posts can't be too offensive, amongst other things. This means you can find all the funny and good stuff without the terrible stuff (4chan for example).

Avatar!
Once you have made an account, you can set up some extras in your Profile page, which can be found on the navigation bar at the top of all pages. On the right hand side there are some options. One of the first things to do is make an Avatar, one of those pictures that appears on your posts and comments. There are no size restrictions, but images will be scaled and cropped to a square shape. It doesn't have to be made, it could be an image that you like, that represents you in some way. Sure, you can make one from scratch but you don't need to.

Posting!
You can make a new post any time, by clicking the New Post button below the search box.

To make a post, you simply give it a title, a short description (these are shown on the homepage and searches). Then you add your post content.
Click next to preview your post. Then choose a category. This is just for organisation on the site. Please choose carefully, as the category CANNOT be changed later.

To add pictures, music files or videos to your post, click the browse button below the post text area.
Select files. You CAN select multiple files to upload!
You will see some progress bars which will upload your files, 3 at a time (because of technical issues, its difficult to upload more than 3 files at 1 time over HTTP).
Once they are done, you will see a little text field with a URL in it. Copy and paste into your post, or click the Add to Post button. This automatically adds the URL to the bottom of the post.
To add pictures, music or video, just paste the URL. No tags are needed! Literally just type http://site .com/i mage.j pg (without spaces) and it will AUTOMATICALLY put the image there. Simple. It works with youtube videos too.

To make bold text, put it in [ b] tags (no space) [ /b] - Result
To make Italic, put in [ i] tags (no space) [ /i] - Result
To make a URL, type [ url=http://www.sharenator .com] Click to see Awesome [ /url] Result.

These can also be combined like so: AWESOME SITE

If you are embedding flash, find the .swf file and either upload to sharenator using the file uploader, or put the flash file in [ flash] http: // filename.s wf [ /flash] tags.

The categories you can make your post in are:
Flash, for flash animations/games.
Pics, for pictures of any sort. Photos, fails, comics etc.
Videos, for any sort of video. Youtube clips etc.
Misc, for anything else that doesn't fit into one of the above.
Tip: If you contain a mix of these things, choose the category it contains a lot of, eg Lots of pictures + 1 video, put it in Pics.

You also have Ask, which is just for questionny things you want to ask anyone or the site admins about.
And finally, chat. This is general banter. Just to say or ask about something (Eg, what kind of music do you people like?)

Then, pick a thumbnail. This is a little picture shown in searches etc. to represent the post.
You are automatically given thumbnails for any pictures you have added to your post, but you can upload a custom one too.

Posting Rules
Before posting, please check Sharenator Post Guide. Its a little more detail on this:

-Follow the ToS. If your post breaks the Terms of Service, then it will be removed by a Moderator.
-Make the post worth viewing. PLEASE, please please! Do NOT just make a single line saying "im gonna go away for a few weeks, bye!". You CAN do that, but add it to a valued post, such as some pics.
-Avoid Reposting. Use the search box, with keywords to do with what you plan to post. Someone may have already posted it. Avoid duplicating posts.
-Be Kind! This is also part of the ToS, but just be kind to other people!
-ALWAYS POST IN ENGLISH! This is an ENGLISH website, and is mainly viewed by English speaking people.
We do not want to have a "junk post" that we can't read or understand. If you post in any other language apart from English (unless its a video with translations etc), the post will be removed.

Points and Rankings
Each user has a "Rank". This rank is based on points. A new account has no points, and you CAN rate yourself. Ratings are remembered, so you cant rate, refresh and rate again. But you can change your mind. You automatically rate up your own posts.

Posts can be rated up to +3 points and down to -3 points per person.
Comments can be rated up one or down one.

Rating a post or comment changes the points a user has. So, if you give a post +3, the maker of that post gains 3 points. Then, just like a leaderboard, these points are ordered into rankings (which can be viewed here.

Theres nothing important about rankings, it just shows how many things people post and how popular their posts are.

Admins and Moderators
This site has 2 admins, Paul and Darius. Be nice to them! You will notice, they appear as a normal user. As they say, they just want to appear as normal members, so they don't have a fancy "admin" badge or anything.

The site has 16 moderators (at the time of posting). These were not picked from ranking etc. just from trust and how they view the site (im guessing how they seem to take other peoples actions.)

The moderators are not marked either. They have the anonymity that they can either keep or reveal. I'm not going to say who they are, but I will say that I am one.

Moderators can't do much before you think "unfair!". All they can do is delete a post if they find it inappropriate. They also receive an alert when a post is reported. We can't add more than 3 on ratings, or change ratings, mute/block users etc. Nope, just post deletion.

Abusive members though WILL be reported to the Admins, who can remove your account. So, be careful.

The VERY important bit!
If you only do one thing while you are here, then make sure its this...

IF YOU EVER SEE AN INAPPROPRIATE POST, HIT THE REPORT BUTTON BELOW THE POST!
This helps to keep this site clean, fair and enjoyable.

Hope you had the caring time to read it!
I think I covered everything, and have a nice time on this site!

If you are unsure about something, search in the search box and there are various posts like this one but in more detail in specific areas (eg, posting flash).

We have a wide range of members, from different countries, with different interests an backgrounds. For example, some people here like photography, some are into web design (me). The site was made by (eastern europeans i think?) but hosted on USA servers. There are us Mac users, and there are Windows users! (And possibly some linux users now too).

Whoa! FatWilliam is a Moderator? Who would have guessed that?

    lolz
    you never knew?
you can find out who the mods are by going on the mod panel and looking on the right hand side. the numbers just show how much stuff they have deleted.
    - SkinnyBill November 1, 2010, 9:28 pm
Sorry, that was meant to be sarcastic. I guess I didn't portray that enough. And yea, you're a lazy Mod. :p
    - CallMeGoogle November 2, 2010, 7:31 am
lol just because you have deleted a couple more posts than me :P

im totally un-biased, i only will run on the ToS violations.
    - SkinnyBill November 2, 2010, 7:46 am
Yea, that's good. I feel like I'm never deleting infractions. Most things I delete though, are when I'm up late and someone posts a battery ad or a different language ad that even translated doesn't make sense.
    - CallMeGoogle November 2, 2010, 7:52 am
lol battery ad, i remember that one :P
    - SkinnyBill November 2, 2010, 9:51 am
Yeah I've delete a few of those battery ads as well. They are very annoying. I think paul, darius, and wrappedinbacon delete most infractions.
    - Jofus1992 November 2, 2010, 12:36 pm
Well aside from some spam today that I forwarded to Paul to ban, I haven't gotten many reports in a while, so things appear to be going smoothly :P

your hyperlink for "awesome site" doesnt work... seems like you meant for it to be "sharenator.com". but its "sharenator.com/sharenator.com" which doesnt work... just letting you know XD

yeah i know. basic linking in html. because i diddnt put http:// in front, html thinks that you mean the current or root directory, so the root directory is www.sharenator.com/ and what i typed was www.sharenator.com so it interpreted it as a file or folder, aka www.sharenator.com/www.sharenator.com
    - SkinnyBill November 2, 2010, 7:44 am
    ok, just making sure

I do think the moderators are unfair. Peachy bastards can delete anything.

we can but we are trusted that we wont. we will only delete something that violates the ToS. Not just our opinion.
    - SkinnyBill November 2, 2010, 7:44 am
Dude, I'm a mod too. it was kinda supposed to be a joke
    - Jofus1992 November 2, 2010, 8:25 am

well like i say, we are unmarked and have an anonymous status that we can choose to keep.
    - SkinnyBill November 2, 2010, 7:44 am
Is it possible that i'm a moderator but my secret is so well kept that even I don't know it?
    - Pharmon November 2, 2010, 7:48 am
nope you arent. if you are wanted you will be personally contacted, and will have to accept first.
    - SkinnyBill November 2, 2010, 9:50 am
    ok, thanks

What rank would you have to be above to be considered a sharenator newbie?

IMO, there aren't really sharenator n00bs. Just start posting, and your stuff will catch on. Seems like every day I read a post from new members, so keep posting and you'll be considered a regular sharenator :)
    - WRAPPEDinBACON November 2, 2010, 5:14 pm
We don't think there is really a rank for consideration, so much as how many people know your name. To us Rank only shows how much content that you posted others liked, and depending on the score of the post how much others liked that content. However no matter how new or old you are so long as you are respectful and nice to others you will always be accepted. ^^
    - Dawn November 2, 2010, 5:14 pm
yep, not ranking as such. just how much of a contributor you are and how long you have been here.
