Nukes

nuclear explosion

The United States has 5,113 nuclear warheads in its stockpile and "several thousand" more retired warheads awaiting the junkpile, the Pentagon said Monday in an unprecedented accounting of a secretive arsenal born in the Cold War and now shrinking rapidly.

The Obama administration disclosed the size of its atomic stockpile going back to 1962 as part of a campaign to get other nuclear nations to be more forthcoming, and to improve its bargaining position against the prospect of a nuclear Iran.

The Pentagon said the stockpile of 5,113 as of September 2009 represents a 75 percent reduction since 1989.

Who agrees with me; that is still a lot of nukes!

good point, the other day my history teacher explained that if all the nukes that the U.S. had during the cold war would kill all life on earth and that 1 nuke today is equivalent to more than 100 of the Hiroshima bombs

yeah it's insane, hopefully it's something the world will never have to experience

nothing much we can do about it so i'm with u lets hope that never happens at least in our life time, for the most part

From what I have hear. We have enough nukes to kill all life on earth 3 times over. But right now I don't really think is the time to be spending money on this. Our economy is in shambles. We need to spend money on urgently needed things. This Is important but I don't know if it is one of our priorities.

But all nukes are not the same. Sone are made to be more destructive than others depending on the tactical situation.

The most important question is if we have over 5000 nukes now and that's a 75% reduction....... how many fucking nukes did we have in 1989

let's face it, the US is never going to need them unless some f**ckhead decides to invade russia

Well I was just refering to things like tactical nukes. Those are anti-peronnel nukes but there are others that are made to destroy cities.

    Reply
  • 1

but isnt destroying cities destroying personnel?

    Reply
  • 1

That's enough nukes for one every 27202 km-squared (Brief calculation, sue me if I'm a bit off) of the worlds land mass excluding the US. For you Americans, that's about the size of Massachusetts, for Brits, that's about the size of Ireland, for anybody else, I can't be bothered to find another one.

    So yeah, be afraid. :P

    Reply

Yes but the tactical nukes are significantly smaller. Also the object of destroying a city would be to inflict mass causualties civilian or otherwise.

ohhh i new that jus makin sure u new lolz

    Reply

still, realistically they shouldn't be needed. The only situation they have been used against another country was against Japan in 1945, and they needed them then. They don't now

    Reply

a nuke is like a gun in the house. it something you pray you never need to use, but if you do need it nothing will supplement it.

    Reply
  • 1

Yeah but really now they are pretty much just a defensive mechaism. If we go to war with any other country it would be very unlikely that either would use a nuke because of MAD. But you'd better have nukes cause if you don't they will be used on you.

Let's turn that reduction around! You can never have too many nuclear weapons. :) Although, Chuck Norris counts as at least 9000 of them.

Ever heard of cyber warfare? Basically, we now have the technology to hack into a country's power grid and finance amoung other things. Imagine if the pentgon was hacked. Nowadys we also have anti-nuke weapons made/in developement. (For example, satillites that can destroy/disable nukes before the hit.) So in this day and age, nukes are the least of our worries.

No way man. Waste of money on weapons everyone's too scared to use.

But you wouldn't want to run into one in an alley or wake up with one in your face.

    Reply

Yes I have heard of it. But in a worst case scenario that may not work or the satellites could get shot down. But I'm not so worried about getting hit with a nuke by a country but instead by some crazed jihadist.

i agree we can't have too many. that being said i am a big fan of the kinetic energy weapons program obama has approved. nukes are like guns in the home. you hope you never need it, but if you do need it nothing can replace it.

if my math is right, we had 20452 nukes before the reduction

    Reply

some where in that ball park would be the number yes. Now to blow your mind how many of the nukes were MERVS? Mervs can carry yup to 8-12 war heads that can attack different cities from one rocket.

I say we just use em on whoever we don't like today, cuz we all know it's gonna change again tomorrow. First it was Iraq, then Afghanistan, now it's Pakistan and Iran, to quote the late great George Carlin, "America has been in the business of bombing brown people for over 60 years, if you've got brown people in your country you'd better watch the fuck out."
