This is exactly what motor shows are all about: crazy, futuristic concept cars that look otherworldly but nonetheless provide a genuine glimpse into the future. The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept has every inch the skin of tomorrow's supercar, but it's so much more than a show-stopping styling exercise.

What's all the fuss about?

Despite looking like every boy's bedroom wall fantasy, the car you see here is powered by a three-cylinder diesel engine and a couple of electric motors. Not that exciting, you might think, except it's got 356bhp and 560lb.ft of torque, which makes it a bona fide M car. But wait, there's more. While pushing out those tremendous figures and the associated performance stats they'll produce, the car achieves 75.1mpg on the combined cycle and 99g/km of CO2. That means you can drive right through London in one of these for free.

What makes it so green?

Diesel-hybrid technology is still scarce (though Peugeot is showcasing a couple of near-production examples at Frankfurt) because of its cost, so it's a fairly new technology. In this application, the 163bhp diesel engine is linked to two electric motors so that both power sources can work in tandem, or the oil burner can be shut off altogether for electric-only power at lower speeds for about 30 miles. It also features a Thermo Electric Generator that takes heat from the exhaust system and converts it to electric energy to power the interior lights and things.

When can I buy one?

You can't, obviously, and BMW is saying nothing about production, except that everything you see is perfectly viable. The German maker isn't diluting its efficiency and performance message by claiming it highlights a 'future design direction' either, as is usually the case with sporty concepts like this. That said, we'd be more than happy if the next 3 Series had that front end.

pass, i don't like 3 cylinders. everyone knows cylinders must be even. 2,4,6,8,10,12,16,24 cylinders, not 3.

not only that. the car is ugly as sin. id take a ford f150 over that anyday...

and im not even gonna start on the glass doors. quick way to land my ass in prison
    - c8r15 October 13, 2010, 10:10 am
it is ugly but to be fair its a concept. the body styling as is will not ever be put into production. i would say pay attention to it since parts of it will probably be used in future cars.
    - johnecash October 13, 2010, 10:21 am
true about concept cars... but even for a concept car its butt ugly
    - c8r15 October 13, 2010, 11:03 am
    agreed.
    - johnecash October 13, 2010, 11:05 am
future cars better not have clear doors like that... how else would i be able to hide my beer while rolling a blunt while im driving without cops seeing?
    - c8r15 October 13, 2010, 11:11 am
from the concepts i have seen they won't be clear but they will be like one way glass. just imagine a car where you don't have any blind spots... thats what they are going for.
    - johnecash October 13, 2010, 11:27 am
That's just silly. There have been plenty of 3 cylinder cars, the Yugo was one. Also Audi made 5 cylinders for a long time.
    - r60man October 13, 2010, 3:59 pm
i did not say there has never been odd cylinder-ed vehicles.
    - johnecash October 13, 2010, 7:11 pm
it wouldnt matter, its just making electrical power and trasnfering it to the wheels via electric moters, you dont need a big engine and its very efficient and a way to make a car much faster

I don't understand why they make the concept car and then be all like
"Oh this is just a concept, these won't be out until 2089."
BUT ITS RIGHT THERE!! WHY DON'T YOU SELL THAT?!

because its the concept car. they need it lol
    - bufus101 September 26, 2011, 5:14 am
Yeah, but you understand where I'm coming from right? The reason we don't have all this futuristic stuff is because marketing assholes like them don't sell them even though they can.
    - BlurrySours September 26, 2011, 5:15 am
i understand your point. but a lot of the time to mass produce something like that, they wouldnt make a profit. plus if you sell that kind of car ahead of its time, a lot of people wouldnt buy it. if it breaks down, what mechanic knows how to fix it? that question i believe is what is the main thing holding back production of cars like that.
like my dad wanted to buy a new car with the new idea of an infinitely variable transmission. the issue was, he didnt know if it would hold up like a normal transmission. and if it failed, how would you get it fixed?
    - bufus101 September 26, 2011, 5:22 am
    Instruction manuel?

Guess we're gonna' need more women mechanics.
    - BlurrySours September 26, 2011, 5:25 am
lol. its more in depth than that
