    #4 what if the rocks and sands are full of bacteria... will it still work as filter?

    The rocks and sand are basically used as a sieve, they stop large matter from passing through the filter. The coal is the main component of the home-made water filter. Coal is good for absorbing organic matter and chemicals, this is why it is located at the bottom of the filter.
