    Its not that computers aren't honest, its just mathematical.

    a = amount of the "operation" completed (such as data transfer KB)
    t = total amount of the completed operation
    r = current rate
    e = estimated time until completion
     c = counter (counting elapsed time)

    REPEAT THIS CALCULATION EVERY SECOND{
      r = a/1 // x is the amount per second
      e = t/x //estimated time is total divided by the rate
      c + 1 //adds 1 second to the counter

     e - c = e //takes the time elapsed away from the estimated total time, leaving the most accurate time.
    Display e.
    }

    To put into practice... lets say we have a 1MB file, which is being moved from a hard drive to a memory stick at 10.24kb/s (very slow).

    10.24kb/1s = 10.24 kb/s
    1MB = 1024kb
    1024kb/10.24kb/s = 100 sec
    100 sec into Min = 1 min 40 sec.
    0 + 1 = 1//counter

    Est. until completion: 1 min 39 sec.

    --- 1 second later ---
    10.24kb/1s = 10.24 kb/s
    1MB = 1024kb
    1024kb/10.24kb/s = 100 sec
    100 sec into Min = 1 min 40 sec.
    1 + 1 = 2 //counter

    Est. until completion: 1 min 38 sec

    But what if the transfer rate changes?!
    Recalculate of course! Keep the elapsed time though!

    20.48kb/1s = 20.48 kb/s
    1MB = 1024kb
    1024kb/10.24kb/s = 50 sec
    2 + 1 = 3 //counter

    50-3 =
    Est. until completion: 47 sec

    -----------------

    And now you know why it can never make its mind up. Transfer rates vary depending on the connection quality, the speed of the connection, and how busy your computer is. If you are just doing one thing, it will happen faster. If you are multitasking, as different tasks do different actions at random times, taking over processing and memory, the speed fluctuates.

    How the fuck do you know all this ?? Are you some kind of evil genius or what

    Mainly, because im a geek, but really its just that simple..

    current rate = how much done in this second
    total file size / current rate
    current rate - the total time taken so far
    Convert into Minutes
    Display

    And repeat every second.
