Man, this is too hard a question for most people. I can give you a top 10 maybe, but not a 1.
Shawshank Redemption
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Donnie Brasco
Godfather Series
Interview with a Vampire
Good Will Hunting
The Big Lebowski
Alien 1, 2
Mystic River
Constantine
I know there are a bunch of movies that I'm not thinking of right now, so this answer is not quite accurate.

I am learning to edit movies as a career and i study movies pretty in depth sometimes ha
1. Pans Labyrinth- Guilermo del Toro created a masterpiece. Stringing together a mythical fantasy (alice in wonderland) and the harsh realities of war in all its cruelty. Cinematography is flawless and the symbolism hidden within is truly remarkable.
2. Fight club- Cinematography is dirty and gritty the entire movie, which makes the movie fit the actual story line very well. Brad Pitt and Ed Norton... enough said.
3. Lion King- its the fucking lion king! =D

Wrong. I hate that movie. Reason? Well I am a Biology Teacher, everyone thinks the Lion King is real. The only issue is that Simba would never ever rule the same Kingdom as his father, why? Well all of the females are his sister! Yes, that is right. According to the movie growing up and having cubs with your sister is the norm in the Lion world. It is not. Oh and Twilight is just stupid too!
ROR! Awesomenss, and yes it's a great movie
Seriously, you can pick your #1 movie just like that?
There are others that come close for me... Almost Famous, Shawshank Redemption, Cabin Fever, Identity, the list goes on and on. It got to the point that I had to have one movie to tell people was my favorite. Gladiator seemed to be a good choice. I never get tired of that movie. And now its in Bluray...
saving private ryan was frickin awesome
wow- no pulp fiction on the list yet? it is now. love that movie
Man i LOVED Paranormal Activity. That was the first scary movie that made me jump/scream.
Ummm, I don't know about favorite. But the one movie that is always awesome when I can't figure out what to watch...
THE FIFTH ELEMENT!!!!!!!!!!
I do think it's probably the best movie made in the last 20 years. But I don't know about all time. Metropolis is probably the closest to my favorite of all time, but not something I watch often.
