Do we aerial dynamics work in space?

so this has been bothering the fuck out of me.
Do aerial dynamics still apply in space since there is nothing there?
but then again wat about Dark matter?
I keep searching the internets but nothing comes up...time & time again ppl say it doesn't matter but they don't explain, so I think about it, & I think it shouldn't matter since it shouldn't have to cut through anything(like gases or "air")right? but then I think if there isn't anything there how can it(space shuttle)keep going since it cant push itself off anything & I get all confused.

can anyone help me sleep again, & u can thank my curiosity for this I just cant stop my self sometimes, its been about a week with this question swimming in my head & there are certain things I still don't understand about aerial dynamics due to the fact that they still haven't taught this to me in school yet but any help will be greatly appreciated

    it's one of newtons laws= for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
    when you push a ball with, lets say, 5 pounds of force, the ball pushes back at you with 5 pounds of force.
    Rockets work by pushing material out of the back of the rocket. the material being pushed out the back pushes the rocket forward due to the equal and opposite reaction principle.

    In answer to your main question, aerodynamics only matter when you're still in the atmosphere to reduce friction and such so it takes less force to push you through the atmosphere.

    Yea he got it dead on. In space a square object(*cough Borg ship cough*) will move just as efficiently as a round object.

    Basically, you're right. Rockets work by pushing stuff out the back, but it's the imbalance of forces that propels the rocket forward. Rockets work by converting fuel into gas inside a container. When the fuel is converted, it builds up pressure (or force) inside. Because the nozzle releases the pressure of one side, you have a net force on the opposite side that propels the rocket forward. It has nothing to do with the air outside the rocket, and everything to do with the gas inside, which is why it works in space.

    Also, Newton's first law states that an object in motion will remain in motion unless acted upon by an external force. So in space, once a rocket is going, it will keep going. Aerial Dynamics comes in when you start talking about friction. The reason jets on Earth have to keep using fuel to keep going is because of the friction of the air around it. Friction is an outside force resisting motion. So, when people talk about making things more aerodynamic, they are referring to reducing the amount of friction caused by the air.
