Hmmmmm Im gonna have to go withhhhh star wars. they can do so much more shit its awesome! will add more to this reply in morning....
I always loved Star wars so much more. Lord of the rings is about the quest, and there was a HUUUUGE plothole where they could of just flown using the giant bird. Star Wars was just a classic, the characters are great, the action was amazing and it was just a film I love.
thats not even close to being true
Star Wars over arching story was a group of Rebels fighting a incredibly massive Galactic empire individually:
A New Hope, Was about a simple farm boy who fins out he is the heir to an ancient tradition of monk-warriors with near mystical powers, he finds a mentor and street smart rouge his loyal companion and some droids to rescue a princess and then lead a last ditch defense of their hidden base.
Empire Strikes Back: Is about the rebellion on the run from the empire after the destruction of their base on Yavin and the, losing their best general Jan Dodona(spelling not sure been a while), Luke goes to look for another mentor and Leia and Han spend half the movie getting cased trapped and sexual tension, eventually Luke goes to rescue them and learns of his fathers identity
Return of the Jedi: Is the rescue attempt of a captured friend (Han) Then a two pronged attack on the Emperors new fortress, one to exploit its weakness the other a direct assault, arguably the best similarity also called a feint in military strategy so technically their ripping off Sun Tsu
LOTR
The Fellowship: A simple farmer gets an ancient artifact that can essentially conquer the world and is advised by his mentor and friend gandalf to journey with his street smart friend Sam and they run into the lovable rouges Merry and Pippen who come along for the ride, eventually they meet a grim looking man named strider who is more than he seems, long story short they gather an even bigger party than Luke and set off on an impossible journey, eventually one pulls a judas and two of the hobbits get captured the judas dies trying to protect them to make up Frodo ans Sam take off by themselves to finish the task and Aragorn and the rest of the party case after those captured
Two Towers: Frodo and Sam wander the wilderness going towards Mordor with the help of a partially rehabilitated Gollum Aragorn and friends chase Merry and Pippen get Gandalf back fight an almost impossible battle and barely win with reinforcements, Merrry and Pippen march an army of trees to destroy isengard.
Return of The King: Pippen fucks up and Gnadalf takes him to Minas Tirith Aragorn takes his party through the Paths of the dead to help build an army Theoden gathers his riders, Fordo and Sam fight shelob gollum betrays them sam take the ring after frodo apparently dies, Minas tirith gets attacked Theoden alsmost least a cavalry charge that breaks their lines (BADASS scene) witch king takes him down, Pippen stabs With king in back Eowyn kills the shit outta him, Aragorn shows up with his Ghost Army clears the Fields of Pelenor, Essentially becomes King Ellesar (spelling check) leads an almost hopeless march of volunteers of men to assult the black gates to give Frodo and Sam a try exploit Saurons weakness, then Aragorn becomes king and Peter Jackson cuts out the Scouring of the Shire
ok so how are they the same?

The amount of effort you put into that.. thats just damn cool. :L
uhhh way to like mega over simplify things and technically the Valar are much stronger than Sauron and they were setting up agents all throughout history to beat him, Gandalf was their top the main reason he helped out Thorin and Bilbo during the Hobbit is he knew that the north was almost completely controlled by hostiles and Smaug could do some serious damage to Rivendel, Mirkwood and Lothlorien so he set up a quest to not only eliminate Samug but also set up very good defenses in the north
Yeah but every movie with fights in it is kinda the same...
Imagine the good guys like hulk, batman or some rebell group beating up a way weaker little nerd with no weapon of any kind. Kind of boring.
So in every movie the bad guys seem to be stronger and bigger...

That's Like saying Starwars and Halo have the same story line. Your simplifying it far to much. You can take any movie or storyline about a group or man fighting against a power and say they are similar by your definition. The two movies stories differ far too much to be similar in any respect besides being called "cult fiction movies". They're even in different genres.
lol. people get so defensive so quickly. yeah i guess i agree with you guys. i did simplify that way too much. personally though i love both movies. i think Lord of the rings is a little bit better though because starwars has a lot of boring parts in their movies. all in all though theyre both really good revolutionary movies

there is no debate Lord of the Rings(FULL STOP)
on account of star wars episode 1, 2, and 3 being terrible. just. terrible... lord of the rings wins in my book. george lucas killed his own series where i cant even enjoy the new ones. though "gandalf the gay" makes it difficult for me to watch a scene with him in it and not think of this picture:

I dont think 1 2 and 3 were terrible... they had awesome effects and were really great movies. 5 6 and 7 are just classics. It's like horror movies like saw or paranormal activities will never be better than classics like the Shining or It...
Balrog. No contest. The only reason the Rancor was badass was because he could eat people. I'm pretty sure the Balrog could eat the RANCOR.
I'm a fanboy for both. That's Like saying "Which is hotter, Megan Fox, or Gerald butler?" It is all based on your personal opinion. If you are a strait male, Megan Fox. If you are gay, either. If you are a strait female, Gerald Butler. Apples and Oranges people.
star wars wins but the balrog is badass

They are both really good stories. Star Wars is actually based on an ancient Epic poem. I forget which one, but it is. Lord of the Rings is a great book and movie series, but you have to like fantasy and medieval settings.
