Even though the tragedy happened in the past, the effects are very cruel and visible. My dad is a doctor and he said that he has never seen so many dead children who were just born. And it was in the years after the tragedy of chernobyl.

Of the original four reactors at Chernobyl, Reactors 1 and 3 were still operating in year 2000 (when this article was written), providing 6,000 jobs and about 6% of the Ukraine's electricity.
I don't know if they still operate today, couldn't find any newer article.
