    By definition, it is the absence of something, so in a way it is. Just like nothing isn't really nothing. As soon as you label something, it automatically then is something. Gah, it's so confusing!

    Well, a vacuum and "the absence of something" are still quite different. A vacuum is specifically the absence of matter, but quite a bit of energy is present in a perfect vacuum. As are virtual particles : ).
