Are we doing enough?
While the United States is in Haiti trying to help the suffering, the question we need to really ask ourselves is, are we doing enough.
Ponder about the country Israel for a minute, they flew in 144 doctors and built a rescue- state of the art-hospital in 24 hours. Respectively, if the United States is a superpower, then we obviously have the resources and man power to provide lavish help to Haiti. My question to you is, “We are doing something, but are we really doing as much as we possibly can?”

We are doing plenty. We sent search and rescue teams from all over the country. Chances are the doctors from Israel volunteered their time. How many doctors from the US have gone? I don't know for sure, but I know 4 personally who have been there for various periods of time.
The US has given and done plenty. How much have any of the terrorist organizations done?

I love ignorant people outside of America, who believe everyone over here are war frenzied idiots that are terrible people. Grow up and stop categorizing everyone.

The first sentence was referring to the fear culture within America, something which I am actually very knowledgeable about (even if I sound arrogant saying so). The second was a question directed at the person above specifically, not the nation. The third was designed to show how I think far too many people think about the world and themselves. I've never said anything negative about the American people as a whole because that would be a ridiculous comment to make, I've made several about the nation itself however :P
I generally consider myself pretty mature. I'm also willing to accept when I'm ignorant on a subject, I'd then try to learn more on the subject to make up for my shortcomings. Ignorance is a very different thing to stupidity and isn't something people should ever be ashamed of.

I'd gladly vote to spend more money and time helping other countries...only after we have achieved political peace, economic stability, and giving everyone in the country a house and income.

we are doing plenty we've sent container ships full of food there we have our military down there doing search and rescue missions and trying to keep peace we are using our time and money on haiti when it could be spent here. Ok israel built a hospital in 24 hours but they dont have as many men down there helping as we do. its not the united states problem to go and solve for them it's fine to help but we shouldn't take the biggest burden for this

Yea, we have over 10,000 troops over there, a "shit-ton" of doctors and a "shit-ton" of other volunteers. Not to mention a few assholes that are
trying to kidnap Haitians from their homeland (I'm speaking of the 10 Americans that are locked up in Haiti because they are idiots). We have plenty of help over there.
PS: We have raised more money for Haiti than any other natural disaster to take place on this side of the world.
PS:PS: I have a lot more to say about this, but I'll spare you all for now. +3 for the topic

I understand what you're saying. I'm not saying it's not an amazing, humane, wonderful thing to do. It is. I'm just saying we need to take care of ourselves first in my opinion. I know it's callous, and i know that what we're doing there is just and right. Just saying.

My response is: Fuck Haiti. We got our own shit to deal with here in the U.S. We don't need to be going over into other countries and spending all our money (that we don't really have) over there. We need to fix ourselves before we go and try to play hero with some other country. Sorry, but that's how i feel on the matter.

I agree with Dannyl here. Put it this way: If large parts of America suffered from big natural disasters, what would Americans do if the response of the rest of the world to pleas for aid of the US was "Fuck America. We're in shit anyway, we've got a recession to sort out. The Yanks can just wait 'till we've dealt with ourselves"

I despise McDonalds with a passion. What i'm saying is, we've got our own issues. I see where you're coming from, but...let's look at it like this. One child is stabbed in the chest and is bleeding out. The father of the bleeding child looks out the window and sees some chap with his arm crushed. Then the doctor looks at his bleeding son, think "oh he can wait", and abandons him to go poke at the other guy. It doesn't make sense. Not to mention how far in debt we are already. I've lost track of the national debt, but i'm pretty sure it's past eight or nine figures.

It would certainly be past eight figures.
But this is different, hence the McDonalds comment.
It's your story, except the chap with his arm crushed is dying and the child doesn't have enough money for a McDonalds. Helping people whose lives are at stake is far more important than money.

I agree that Americans should help the people of Haiti (which there are many doing so). But here is my question to all why does the world assume that Americans should just help, I believe some people just say that as an excuse so they don't have to go help themselves. ( granted I know there are other nations helping ) And another question I have for you guys is why only Haiti ? There is poverty all over the world; what about sex trafficking 12 year old girls, 5 year old girls, and even little boys, and genocide in Darfur. I guess my point is how is it just that you just help Haitians? Is it to tell yourself, hey I gave some money, I did something; when you know deep down that you're just giving to clear your conscience for the mean time. I think it is because the media is showing this, when it isn't showing the rest. What does the people of Sharenator think?

Thanks for you comment,
I think the world assumes that America should help becuase America is thought of one of the best countries to live in. We have what is called "the American dream" America and the UK are the only places really where an average Joe can succeed respectivelly.
Secondly, I think that America does need to step up to the plate on other issues that don't have voices to speak for them! Things must be done, and it is up to us to stop all the suffering.

It is human nature to make others suffer so that you can benefit. Whether it is intentional or not, it will happen to everybody on both sides of the spectrum. In other words, you want to end the suffering? End the world, otherwise there's too many of us to stop it all.

a) it's hardly just america that is providing aid. That just happens to be mentioned a lot because this post is about america.
b) because other nations simply aren't allowed to. If america, or another nation, moved into another country to stop sex trafficking for example then it would be an invasion. It's simply not your business. don't get me wrong i'm not defending it. That's just how it is, you can't take control of another country to right something that you consider wrong.
