30 Years of Motivation: A Mel Olson Story
The Story of a Teacher at my school.

Walking down the hallways of MHS, one would hear the sounds of bustling students, locker doors slamming and the sound of Mel Oslson yelling at the juniors, or perhaps keeping his students in line.
With a Masters degree in History from the University of South Dakota and a Masters degree in Education from Northern State University, Olson has been educating the students of MHS for 29 years, this year being his 30th. Throughout the years, Olson has been teaching Ancient World History, United States' History and a Critical Issues class. Along with teaching classes, Olson has been running the musical, held every year at MHS, and aslo the supervisor for the annual junior class magazine sales.
Every year, around second block during the month of September, the students of MHS hear Olson grap the telephone and let the entire school know how the juniors are holding up. Whether it's singing a song, gently letting the class know that they're succeeding or just yelling at them about their failure until he's red in the face, Olson does the job every year, and motivates the class to reach their goal.
But how did Olson get started with the magazine sales in the first place?
"Mr. Andrewjeski was in charge of the sales when I came, the schedules were different, so I would go down and do crowd contol," said Olson. "One year, I told the juniors that I would shave my head if they broke the record, I sort of turned into the motivational guy."
However, during coronation of 1988, his head was shaved anyway, which he now blames for his hair problems today.
"After Mr. Andrewjeski retired, Mr. Engel and I were the guys. Now it's just me," said Olson.
Olson has made himself quite a reputation at MHS, by being remembered as the only teach known to scream at his sudents on a regular basis..
"I do a lot of this screaming in front of Mr. Mock (Vice Principal) or Mrs. Palli (Principal), so it's in pursuit of a larger goal, it's like when coaches yell at their kids to do better. It's not to be mean, I'm saving people from themselves," said Olson.
There's no doubt that Olson has left an impact on all of his students, in the past or present. Whether it was teaching them fats about history left out of a text book, or yelling some sense into them, Olson will always be remembered by his students.
