    I would imagine that this would only benefit a moderate drinker, not the binge drinking that many of us know, and love.

    Well, it does help kill certain infections. As alcohol flows round you, some germs that come in contact with it will be killed. However, its probably not a good idea to drink while ill, as for all those germs that avoid the alcohol you then have a weakened immune system from the alcohol.
